Derryn Carnaby is on the walk of her life.

She is trekking 600 kilometres from Kalgoorlie in Western Australia's Goldfields to Perth with a small group of like-minded people to raise money for research into asbestos-related cancers, such as mesothelioma and asbestosis.

“People say Derryn, you're mad, you're crazy but when they find out what I'm doing it for, they just put their hands in their pockets and put something in the tin,” she said.

Ms Carnaby says she's just an everyday citizen, turning a traumatic personal experience into a positive one.

“I lost both of my parents and two brothers to mesothelioma,” she said.

“There doesn't seem to be any hope once they are diagnosed, it's horrible.

“We've just got to find a cure, that's all, we just need a cure.”

Ms Carnaby is hoping the walk, which she estimates will take several days, will help do just that.

“My Mum and I once said we should walk to Kalgoorlie, I don't know why we said it, but we thought it would be good fun to do it.

“Mum never made it, she died of the disease so I said to my brother and sister, lets do something.”

Ms Carnaby's mother and father used to live and work in the Pilbara town of Wittenoom, where they raised three of her siblings.

During the 1950s and 60s, the nearby Wittenoom Gorge was Australia's major producer of blue asbestos.

From the early 1940s until the mine closed due to serious health concerns in 1966, more than 20,000 people had lived in the town, including more than 4,000 children.

Today, Wittenoom is a ghost town and remains the site of Australia's worst industrial disaster, with more than 100 West Australians dying each year from asbestos-related cancers.

The family then moved to Kalgoorlie where Ms Carnaby was born as well as three more siblings.

“That's where we were as a big happy family, not a torn family,” she says.

The Asbestos Disease Society of Australia's president, Robert Vojakovic, is joining Ms Carnaby and about 20 other people on the walk.

The 72-year-old Australian of the Year winner used to work in Wittenoom and has dedicated his life to helping those affected by the disease.

Mr Vojakovic says the deaths are not only amongst Wittenoom workers and their families, but also those who have come into contact with asbestos products.

“There are more and more people coming to our office [who] were exposed through renovations, or just being there as children when their fathers were building cubby houses, building a carport or putting an extra room in the house,” he said.

“Drugs for treatment get very expensive and the patients can't afford it.

“I don't want these people to be short of money if there is a need for medication, we're talking about saving lives and this walk will save lives.”

Mr Vojakovic says generations are being destroyed.

“Its unacceptable, right now we have an epidemic,” he said.

“At this point in time I know about 47 cases of mesothelioma in this state.

“What's upsetting me is people who worked in Wittenoom are dying, their children are dying and their grandchildren are dying from the same source of exposure to the asbestos.

“We can't allow generations of people to be destroyed.”

Devastating generations

All money raised will be donated to a research unit into asbestos-related cancers at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, which leads the global research into treatment.

A Professor of Medicine at the University of Western Australia and an oncologist at the hospital, Anna Nowak, says the money will go a long way.

“I'm so grateful for the support,” she said.

“Without the support as well as government funding, this research doesn't happen.”

“It's very hard to get funding for mesothelioma because its a rare cancer compared with lung cancer, breast cancer and colon cancer, but it affects so many Western Australians.

“The type of asbestos around Western Australia is exactly the right size and shape to go down through the airways and penetrate through the outer wall of the lung and into the lining of the chest wall.

“It's like a needle shooting down the airways and lodging in your chest.

“Over many, many decades it can cause mutations in those cells and eventually one of those cells will turn into a cancer cell.”

Ms Nowak says in the last two weeks, she has seen two new patients with mesothelioma who spent their very early years at Wittenoom.

“One spent the first two years of their life there, and other spent the first six months,” she said.

“So, these are people who were babies and toddlers in Wittenoom whose father worked there during a short period of their childhood and now they have mesothelioma.

“It's just devastating.”

The group see hundreds of people every year, including Ms Carnaby's mother before she passed.

“They're so dedicated and clever so I'm sure that they can get there if they just had the funding,” says Ms Carnaby.

So far, she has raised nearly $25,000 for the cause with the goal of a grand total of $100,000.

“I'll walk a million miles for them and I'll walk a million miles in honour of the people who lost their lives from it.”

The Libby Board of Health has put forth an initiative for a plan that would reduce current and future risk of asbestos exposure to residents throughout the Montana city made infamous by asbestos.

With funds provided by a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the initiative aims to focus on developing a long-term plan to reduce asbestos exposure threats now and in the future, as the EPA cleans up the Superfund site.

A Superfund site is a location that has been designated by the EPA as a place that needs cleanup, because of the presence of hazardous waste. Asbestos, the mineral known for causing respiratory diseases like mesothelioma and lung cancer, is commonly found at these sites.

The EPA has been working to clean up the Libby Superfund site, but much work is still needed.

“since 1999, the EPA has been removing vermiculite and Libby amphibole contaminated materials from residential, commercial and public properties throughout South Lincoln County,” said Allen Payne, Libby City-County Health Committee member.  “EPA’s cleanup effort is ongoing and may continue for a number of years, but eventually the EPA will complete its cleanup work.”

Because much of the initiative will be executed after the EPA’s asbestos removal is complete, Libby’s Board of Health’s plan will allow the city to focus on prevention rather than cleanup.

For an area with a devastating health past, continued environmental cleanup efforts are greatly needed.

Libby, Montana, was the home of one of the world’s largest vermiculite mines and subsequently one of the world’s largest asbestos-contaminated sites.

Dating back to 1919, the city was a commercial haven for mining. The minerals mined were used for countless insulation materials including attic insulation, construction building materials and related products.

W.R. Grace & Company owned these Libby mines and employed over 200 people between the years of 1963 and 1990. As vermiculite was being mined, it was eventually discovered that asbestos was contained within large quantities of vermiculite.

For decades, shipments of asbestos-tainted vermiculate were sent to countless parts of the world. Locally, workers who spent hours each day around the deadly substance eventually suffered.

More than 400 deaths are attributed to asbestos-caused diseases in the city. and since 1979, more than 1,500 people have developed similar illnesses.

The lasting effect of the W.R. Grace mine has not disappeared.

Despite a past filled with illnesses and death, the town known for asbestos is moving forward.

According to committee members, the underlying objective is to create an effective plan to protect the public’s health.

Officials from Libby are not the only one involved in the initiative. Representatives from two other locales in Montana, Troy and Eureka, are expected to participate in the initiative. these two areas neighbor Libby and have been known for also being affected by asbestos exposure.

With the conclusion of an April meeting that outlined the plan, involved members are expected to now begin evaluating different ways to reduce asbestos exposure.

According to local reports, the committee members include: Libby City Councilwoman Peggy Williams, Mayor Doug Roll, Environmental Health Director Kathi Hooper, Attorney Allen Payne, County Commissioners Marianne Roose, Tony Berget, Ron Downey, Health Department Nurse Mickey Carvey and Dr. Brad Black.

Tomorrow, April 28, 2012 is Workers’ Memorial Day, an internationally recognized day that’s been set aside to remember workers who have passed from work-related diseases, such as mesothelioma, or other work-related incidents. Though day was first set aside in 1970 by the Occupational Health and Safety Act, we are still fighting today for safe workplaces. interestingly, April 28 is also the anniversary of the creation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Most people think that we don’t need things like Workers’ Memorial Day anymore because, surely, all of the wonderful laws in America protect workers in every environment from harm. Well, that’s sort of (not really) true. Asbestos is not banned in the U.S. we are still importing hundreds of metric tons of the deadly material each year for use in construction and other consumer products, most commonly roofing materials. Workers are still being exposed to asbestos in this country every day.

And that asbestos can cause serious health problems decades down the line. Asbestos has been linked to numerous diseases and life-altering medical conditions. Worse, asbestos has been known to cause cancers, such as mesothelioma and certain types of lung cancer. the worst part? these diseases, especially mesothelioma, could have been prevented.

How, you say? Well, did you know that the companies who used asbestos in their products knew that asbestos could cause these horrible cancers long because it became known to the public? Yep, they did, but they actively hid the truth so they could continue to profit from asbestos. In even today, in many countries, these companies continue to perpetuate lies about the “safe use” of “certain types” of asbestos.

That’s why we still need Workers’ Memorial Day. not just to remember those who have fallen, but to fight for those who deserve to live.
